FabFitFun: The Canadian Experience

So many subscription boxes and only so much time (and space and cash flow – but you know …). This post is not about whether or not you should look into purchasing the Summer 2018 box (I mean the Fall 2018 box is already rolling out), but it IS about my thoughts with the service overall being a Canadian and having to spend more money to purchase, including shipping. FabFitFun is a quarterly subscription box that costs $49.99 USD a month.

Here is a bright and colorful shot of the box I received:

The previews for this box were what convinced me to get it. The Tarte Tartiest Pro Glow Highlight and Contour Palette was nearly worth the cost of the box (retails for $59 CAD)! And tbh I had been debating getting it at Winners (but I got the Park Ave Princess Bronzer and Contour Palette instead). I mean, a girl can never have too many contour palettes!

Also, the BRAND NEW Foreo Luna Fofo! A chance to get your hands on it before anyone else. It retails for $119 CAD at Sephora. I have a Clarisonic, but this is so much more travel friendly!

These two items alone make the Summer Box so worth it. But let’s break it down and see what I actually paid:

  1. I used a code for first time members that got me $10 USD off my box. However, like 30 seconds after making my purchase, I saw that there was a separate code for a free mystery bag add on, which (I’m sure) would have added more than a $10 value. Make sure to check all social accounts and Google for the current promos before jumping on board.
  2. Shipping for Canadians is $8 USD for the box. With shipping and my code, the total came to $47.99 USD ($49.99 + $8 – $10).
  3. This worked out to a total of $63.70 CAD with exchange and GST.

This was the cost for the “basic” month to month version of the FabFitFun subscription. This meant I did not get access to FULL customization of my box, and that I did not get priority shipping. However, being Canadian means our boxes ship out with the first shipment date anyways, so it didn’t really matter.

My options for customizing included a choice between a Summer & Rose Beach Towel in Pineapple or Palm OR Yumi Kim Makeup Train Case in Navy or Floral. I needed a new BIG beach towel for my summer patio recliners, so this was a no brainer for me. Second customization was a choice between Jaboneria Marianella Hawaiian Black Lava Body Caviar, Aromatherapy Associates De Stress Muscle Gel, or a ERTH TU Y YO Ring. The ring was stunning and I decided to use it as a midi ring!!

Every box also included:

  • COOLA Face Sport SPF White Tea Moisturizer
  • Pier Imports Marble Ring Dish
  • Foreo Luna Fofo
  • Giveasip Paper Straw with online link for free Metal Straw

The sunscreen is perfect for summer, and although I have a million facial sunscreens, another is always welcome. Besides, we have a trip booked to Arizona in the November so it will come in handy.

The marble ring dish is sooo cute and the neutral marble design will fit it all styles and decors. Mine is sitting on my bedside table and is the perfect place to put my engagement ring at night to keep it safe.

I totally give a sip! But I found out this was only available to Americans. Super disappointing! I almost wish they didn’t include it at all in the box for Canadians so we didn’t get excited about having a portable and reusable straw to throw in our handbags! Love the concept, just wish I could take part.

I was praying that I would receive any colour of the Luna Fofo other than yellow, and I got Fuchsia. Basically the BEST colour I could have picked! I love the subsequent app. It told me exactly what I thought, I have dry skin. I did the test again after my skin care routine and it totally registered that my skin was more hydrated. It did mention that I should drink more water though …

Other items included in my box:

  • Tarte Tartiest Pro Glow Highlight and Contour Palette
  • Magi Sports Loop Resistance Band
  • Orlando Pita Play Atmos Shield Hair Protectant Treatment Spray

I was disappointed with both of these items (not talking Tarte). And maybe that’s me being picky. But what did you expect? I have a million thera bands and resistance bands and I have a ton of hair products and deluxe samples!! Having fine hair means a little goes a LONG ass way. I would have loved any of the other options offered, but I got both of the ones I was hoping to NOT receive. I read the FabFitFun FAQs and found out that the beauty profiles do not effect what box you are given, or what products you receive. My items proved this, as I had skincare rated high and hair and fitness ranked low (I am a beauty junkie – remember?), and yet still received these options. I would have been happy with any of the other products!

Finally, I got the Tarte palette. Thank goodness this was what I recieved. The other option was the Tarte Tartiest Pro To Go Palette and Tarte Sex Kitten Liquid Liner. I was praying and hoping for the contour palette and the FabFitFun gods heard my screams calls. Seriously, if I got the other option, I think I would have cried and written this subscription service off for life.

FabFitFun has an option to do “add ons” for $10 USD. Unfortunately, the option to add on some of the items was not available in Canada (SURPRISE! … NOT). For example, US customers could add on the makeup case if they had picked to customize their box with the towel (and vice versa). This was not available when I customized (which was immediately after it was live).

Once you are a member you have access to the shop and “community”. I didn’t use either. The community contains videos and articles, along with ways to connect with other members. Not. My. Thing. Give me all the products.

Overall, this box was still worth it even though I got two products I was hoping to avoid. The other products I received were all A+ which made it easy to overlook this. And the ones I didn’t care for are still great products, so I can always gift them. I didn’t use the store or community, and I don’t see that changing. The add ons and straw were not applicable or available for Canadians so that was a little disheartening considering we pay MORE for the service. I also got $10 off which made a huge difference in convincing me to subscribe. In the end though, I cancelled my subscription. I can always reinstate in the future if needed. With this box I saw the full spoilers before signing up, and I would do that again if I was ever to get another box. They are on the pricey side of subscription boxes, however, this one far surpassed in value. The key is deciding if the products you actually like and use will be worth the cost. Remember, the beauty profiles have no influence or merit towards the contents of your box. If you were considering multiple months of subscription, buy a YEAR at a time (four boxes) to allow you FULL customization.

Sephora Jet Set Essentials

I told myself, “no more“. No more random Sephora purchases. No more spending money that could potentially be used at stores with better rewards programs. But then this email happened. And this sale happened. And I couldn’t help myself.

image

Use code “JETSET” at checkout with any $35 CAD purchase and you can pick 3 minis for free!! You also get the additional three samples with all orders. They had mini Dior DiorShow Mascaras available when I checked out. That’s like getting 4 minis and 2 packet samples FREE with your order!! This is available for all Beauty Insiders (great freebie, but seriously Sephora, where are my Rouge exclusives?!?!)

image

Surprise! Sephora is also having a huge Summer Sale with killer deals on Tarte, Peter Thomas Roth, OCC, Clarisonic, Philosophy, and MORE! Some of these sets are 50% off!

Here are some of my favorite items currently on sale. I only bought the OCC Pro’s Picks Lip Tars Set (perfect as it was $36 CAD – so close to that $35 CAD minimum). I’d be lying though, if I said that I wasn’t tempted to buy every, single item in this grid and then some. The only thing stopping me, was the massive amount of makeup I already bought this weekend on my US trip.

image

Will you take advantage of the sale and promo? What were your best finds?! ♡

Lash Stash

Mascara is a must have for me. Even if I feel like putting on NO makeup, I will swipe on a tinted moisturizer, a few coats of a mascara, and grab a tinted lip balm (loving NYX Butter Balms and Chunky Dunks!). Here are my top four favorite mascaras right now.

image

From left to right: Urban Decay Perversion Mascara, Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real! Mascara, Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara, Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes 4-in-1 Mascara.

Urban Decay Perversion Mascara
This mini is from my Naked on the Run palette,  but I had such high hopes for this mascara, that I had actually purchased it in a full size combo pack with the mini Subversion lash primer, a few months before. This mascara is black, black, black. It has a very glossy texture and reminds me of the They’re Real! Mascara formula. What I love most about this mascara is that it remains buildable even after it dries, so extra coats are never a bad thing (even hours after your initial application). I loved this mascara so much that I also received it in the Urban Decay Little Perversions kit.

Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real! Mascara
This mascara has been my favorite for the past couple of years. I love it for a night out. It makes my lashes big, bold, long, seperated, and just all around amazing. I tend to layer this mascara over my Diorshow Maximizer Lash Plumping Serum to give it an extra dose of oomph. This is my go to mascara for any night out!! It will never flake or move. I have slept in this mascara and it looks the same the next morning, no raccoon eyes or anything (although I highly recommend you take your makeup off at night). Seriously, this mascara might not be waterproof but it will outlast you, I promise.

Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara
This is my absolute favorite mascara to wear in the day. It makes my lashes so full and feathery, I love the touchable soft look that they give. This mascara will not last through any amount of sweating, steam, sleeping (raccoon eyes even after a short power nap), or basically any hard work. The staying power is prolonged with a good primer, but I find that defeats the effortless beauty that this mascara offers.

Tarte’s Lights, Camera, Lashes 4-in-1 Mascara
This mascara is my on the go wonder. It is perfect for quick makeup looks after a shower from the gym or for quick touch ups. It isn’t my go to when I’m applying makeup at home with time and abundant choices, but I love it for quick five minutes faces.

Have you tried these mascaras? Do you love them as much as me? Any others you think I would like? Tell me! ♡

Boxing Day Beauties

Finally! FINALLY! My goodies have arrived!!! Sephora did things a little differently this past Boxing Day, but I kind of liked it! I bought a few things online (somethings were online exclusives) and also picked up a couple of extras in store.

In Store Purchases:
image

Buxom Dealer’s Choice
Value: $35 CAD
Steal: $13 CAD
image

I picked up two of these sets!! It came with a mini Hold the Line waterproof eyeliner in “Call Me” and a full sized Full Bodied Lipgloss in “Yoo Hoo”. I already own quite a few of these eyeliners, but this set was worth it just for the lipgloss. The gloss is a beautiful nude shade with plumping effect (but no tingle).

Smashbox Mini Bestsellers Kit
Value: Unknown
Steal: $12 CAD
image

I have used many smashbox products before but none of these ones (yay!). I’m already loving the Photo Finish Hydrating Under Eye Primer. It doesn’t provide all the coverage I would want for my undereye (it says it can be worn alone) but it is a great base to use before applying concealer to the sensitive eye area. The Photo Finish Foundation Primer is Oil-Free and although I don’t wear foundation, will still work well under a BB cream. I love trying new mascaras and the Full Exposure Mascara is no exception. I did receive a sample of this in my Shopper’s Drug Mart Eye Studio Sampler, but I haven’t tried it yet (I have soooo many minis to use!).

Ole Henrikson Merry and Bright Duo
Value: $58 CAD
Steal: $15 CAD
image

I couldn’t help but snap up this deal! I already own and love the Truth Serum Collagen Booster. I love to put a layer on in the morning before I apply my moisturizer. I have never tried the Pure Truth Youth Activating Oil but I am super excited to add this to my skincare routine!

Too Faced Better Than Sex Amazing Eyes Set
Value: Unknown
Steal: $12 CAD
image

It’s no secret that I LOVE this mascara! A girl can never have too much sex many minis. I’m so glad they brought this set back (they offered it a year or two ago) because the eyeliner (Perfect Eyes Eyeliner in Perfect Black) is pretty awesome too. Thanks to recent sale purchases, it’s safe to say I’m pretty stocked on black eyeliners!!

Bare Minerals Crowd Pleasers
Value: $47 CAD
Steal: $12 CAD
image

I love my BareMinerals i.d. bronzer so I am beyond thrilled to add the i.d. blush to my collection! It is a very natural looking blush that is perfect for a minimalist or everyday look. As for the Marvelous Moxie lipgloss (in Hot Shot AND full size!) it is the most perfect flamingo hued pink. This is my first experience with the Marvelous Moxie line!! The applicator seems a little flimsy (I prefer them harder that’s what she said). But the gloss itself is lovely.

Sephora Sparkle Vinyl Lipgloss
Retail: $18 CAD
Steal: $6 CAD
image

A $6 lipgloss? Clearly this was an impulse buy (aren’t they all?). I just couldn’t resist with such a low price tag! This formula is filled with sparkle and shine!

Bumble and Bumble The Ultimate Blow Dry
Value: $18 CAD
Steal: $10 CAD
image

Bumble and Bumble Styling Lotion Spray used to be my favorite go to hair care product in high school. But I haven’t used Bumble and Bumble products since (no idea why? It just happened that way!). I’m sure excited to try these products out and see if I can recreate that spark I used to have with B&B!

Tarte High Performance Naturals Energy Duo
Value: $31 CAD
Steal: $14 CAD
image

This lip and cheek duo are “intuitive”, meaning they appear clear, but once applied will change color and tint based on your skin’s pH and energy. How fun! I do like both of these products, however you need to be mindful of how much product you apply, especially the cheek stain. It goes on clear so it is very easy to apply way too much. Also, with the lip balm, be careful to not let it get on the skin outside of your lips, because it WILL turn your skin pink too! I enjoyed seeing my personal color (which on my lips took on a purple undertone!).

Bite Beauty Mix n’ Mingle Lip Minis (Luminous Crème Lipstick Duo)
Retail: $15 CAD
image

This item was not a Boxing Day special, but I really wanted the duo and they were sold out in store. I love that there are two lipsticks in one “stick”. This is sooo perfect for travel!! I purchased the shades Violet and Palomino. Violet is a beautiful purple fuchsia, and Palomino is a bright true pink (blue undertones?). I’m loving Bite Beauty lately!!

That’s my haul. Oh my. I have bought so much makeup lately. But these deals!!! My online order made me hit Rouge, and although I picked my kit up in store, they sent me another kit with my online order (but without the card). I was so excited to get a second exclusive Bite Beauty Rouge Lipstick but it seems my German Shepherd was more excited. I found him helping himself to the tube (good thing Bite Beauty is all about edible lipstick!!). I was able to scoop some of the remaining product out into a tiny jar, but the tube itself was totalled! Silly puppy!!

Thinking About Me …

My favorite thing to see in the mail, a hot pink, shiny mailer (so glad the matte pink bag from last month was only temporary)! This month, ipsy’s thoughts were all about me!! Or at least it felt that way, what an awesome bag I received this month!

image

Ipsy is a beauty subscription service that sends 4-5 personalized beauty items right to your door. Sometimes they send full size products and sometimes sample size, it’s always a nice mix. They also send a variety of high end products (Urban Decay, Tarte, Bare Minerals, etc.) and as well as some higher quality drug store products (like NYX, Cailyn, etc.). The items come in cute makeup bag with a monthly theme! The price is only $10 USD a month with FREE shipping to US residents ($5 USD shipping to Canada – making the Canadian total around $17 CAD).

I will stalk the post’s tracking website and will squeal with delight when I see that my goodie bag has been delivered. I always peek at my bag early and I was extra excited to get all of my beauty items this month.

image

The bag! Cute, black, lined and with an adorable ipsy heart keychain/zipper pull. This is probably my favorite bag from ipsy yet!

What I got in my December Glam Bag:

1. Cailyn Cosmetics Just Mineral Eye Polish in Orchid – I love loose pigments so I was very excited to try this. The powder itself is pigmented and very shimmery. A perfect light shadow to use as a base on my lids before applying some of my other darker, loose pigments or to use as an inner eye/brow highlight. The sponge tip is nothing special, it’s a little on the hard side (versus my Bare Minerals High Shine Eye Color applicator which is a soft spongy dream). I love this style of dispensing product because it creates minimal mess, which is perfect for people who have trouble working with loose pigments in the traditional jar packaging.

2. Coolway Boost Repair Treatment – The perfect treatment for dry, thirsty, winter hair! Who doesn’t love a good hydrating hair treatment?

3. Crown Brush Infinity Shadow/Crease Duet Brush – I was so excited for this brush! I was quite disappointed when I didn’t get this brush the first time it made an appearance in September’s Glam Bag. Eye brushes are definitely an obsession of mine, I’m always looking for my next favorite. This brush has super soft bristles, and I love that it is double sided with a precise crease brush. I plan to use this with my Urban Decay Naked On The Run palette.

4. NYX Cosmetics Butter Lip Balm in Red Velvet – This has been a great introduction to NYX products. The balm is buttery and smooth with the perfect hint of color, and it smells awesome. I received this in the shade Red Velvet (a pure red) and I am delighted. Ipsy continues to read my mind, they constantly send me the shades I prefer the most time and time again.

5. Tarte’s Lights, Camera, Lashes 4-in-1 Mascara – My first mascara from ipsy, FINALLY, and it’s a great one. I already know and love this mascara. Thank you ipsy for sending such a great brand!

This might be my favorite bag from ipsy yet! They continue to impress me, month after month. Are you loving your ipsy bag this month? Not signed up yet? Click Here to get your own bag. Still not convinced? Click Here to see last month’s bag.

Black Friday Gluttony

Ok. I admit it. I’m beauty obsessed. Like I’m in WAY too deep. And to prove it, here is my Sephora Black Friday haul. And yes, this is all for me (hang my head in blissful shame). I did get gifts too, but those won’t be appearing in my post. It felt like it took forever to get here! But doesn’t it always when you are dying to get your hands on my humps the goodies?? Each of these sets were only $12 CAD!! Such a great deal! And since I ordered online, I got the Flawless Refresh sample bag for FREE (plus the usual 3 free samples).

Thinking About You …

December’s glam bags are all about us and they are LIVE!! Just sign into your ipsy account and you can post to Facebook the contents of your glam bag. You will also get 10 ipsy points just for sharing!

I’m so pleased with my glam bag this month. In fact, since I have been subscribed, I have loved every single bag and nearly every single item. This month is just as amazing!
image

First of all, the bag. The sketch made me think the bag was grey, but it’s black!! And it has a super cute heart pull on it!

My Products:
1. Cailyn Cosmetics Just Mineral Eye Polish in Orchid – I have never used this brand but am super excited to try it out! This is a loose pigment, made of 100% raw mineral powder. I love love love loose powders!

2. Coolway Boost Repair Treatment – I have never used this product before or heard of this brand. I love trying new things and this is definitely one of the reasons I love subscription boxes! It’s winter and so dry! My hair will love a moisturizing treatment.

3. Crown Brush Infinity Shadow/Crease Duet Brush – OMG! OMG! I am elated to have this in my glam bag. I wanted it so badly when it came out in the September glam bag, but ultimately my bag that month rocked so I wasn’t disappointed (remember that no light Gel Polish?! ♡). I looked to possibly purchase the brush from Crown directly, but with shipping it wasn’t worth it (ditto for eBay). I can not wait to try this brush … I’m a sucker for a good crease brush! It honestly came at the perfect time! I needed a new brush solely to go with my new Urban Decay Naked On The Run palette.

4. NYX Cosmetics Butter Lip Balm – I don’t own a single NYX product, but I think this will be a good product to pop my NYX cherry! All four of the available shades look great, I would be happy with any of them. Shades available are: Red Velvet (pure red), Parfait (fuchsia with blue undertones), Marshmallow (pure nude) and Lady Fingers (mauve).

5. Tarte’s Lights, Camera, Lashes 4-in-1 Mascara – It’s no secret that I LOVE this mascara (see “5 in 5“)!! Everyone gets one! I have a few more coming from my Sephora Black Friday order, so obviously one more is welcomed with much obsession!
