Why I Cancelled Birchbox Canada …

I haven’t talked about Birchbox Canada since April’s missing box mix up. I decided I needed to give Birchbox a minimum of three more months to really get a feel for their products, designs, and business in general. In the end, I decided to cancel. Would I go back? Possibly. Would I recommend them to others? Yes. So why did I cancel? I’ll drop it down low, break it down month by month. Grab your popcorn. This is going to be a long one …

May’s Cupcakes and Cashmere Box

My box arrived in a complete mess. My Laqa & Co Lip Lube was smeared all over my products. I was able to clean and salvage 4 of the 5 items I was sent. I immediately contacted Birchbox Canada via email. They responded promptly and solved the issue by sending me a brand new box. I though this was unbelievable customer service!! They put a huge effort into making sure to fix the damaged items. Two weeks passed, and no replacement. I emailed them again to get a tracking number on the replacement. They apologized and said it hadn’t been sent out yet (It was now June) and for the inconvenience, they were paying for my July box. Again, amazing customer service. Mistakes happen, and I understand. I love a company that can own up to their mistakes and go above and beyond to make their customers happy and satisfied.

My May replacement box finally arrived, only a few days before my June box. I got a couple of repeats between the two boxes, but that’s more than ok!!! I got a few different items too. Before we get into my products, I just want to comment on how CUTE these themed boxes are! I absolutely loving finding ways to reuse them.

First Box

Products I Received:
• Rusk Paste
• W3LL People The Expressionist Bio Extreme Mascara
• Raw Spirit Fragrance Desert Blush (not pictured, damaged)
• BeeKind Body Lotion
• Laqa & Co Lip Lube in Menatour

I loved everything in this box, except the fragrance (Raw Spirit Fragrance Desert Blush). This was my 3rd Birchbox and already my 2nd fragrance. I have said it before, but I’ll say it again. I’m sensitive to fragrance. I’m picky with my scents. I’m not impressed by receiving samples of things I can get for free with any Sephora order. Birchbox claims to only send a maximum of 6 fragrances in a year, so far they have used up 33% of that promise … Plus, I hated this scent. I’m a citrus, fruity kind of girl. Floral, earthy scents are so NOT my thing. This was the item that was completely damaged for me. The effort to clean it was not worth it to me. Especially since the card it was in was a death trap of purple Menatour stain.

The Rusk Paste is great for taming flyaways in an updo. However, I feel this product would be a better fit for someone with a short hairstyle. It claims to “set” all styles. I have such fine, thin hair, that I found it extremely difficult to find a balance and not appear greasy.

The W3LL People mascara is an awesome all natural mascara. It’s so nice to have a product free of chemicals and dyes. Don’t expect this mascara to mimic the look of falsies!! It’s all natural and gives an “all natural” look. It made my blonde lashes pop and helped to define my eyes, but it didn’t give me extreme, night out worthy lashes. This mascara is perfect for a quick swipe and go, a minimalist look, or an all around easy, daily mascara. The mascara lasted through out the day, but on one day in particular I was out sunning and was wearing sunscreen. The oils in the sunscreen made the mascara smudge under my eyes. Not a huge deal for me, but this mascara will not hold up in any heat/humidity type of situation. I’d suspect the same would happen with oily skin, as sunscreened faces tend to mimic oily complexions.

The BeeKind Body Lotion was a pleasant surprise. I used the tube up almost immediately. It smelled like the most heavenly lemon zest oasis. It absorbed quickly. And it helps support the world’s bee population! My inital reaction was “another lotion …”. But I was quickly turned to “another Fanfuckingtastic lotion that I NEED in my life”. The end.

Last but not least, I finally received a Laqa & Co Lip Lube. I have watched these make the rounds in the subscription box world, but I somehow managed to miss getting them, every time. I received the shade Menatour, a gorgeous purple. I was super excited to get this shade because purple and blue are so hot right now! These pencils are convenient and perfect for on the go, no sharpener needed. They have a light minty scent and are “sheer”. I use the word “sheer” very lightly. I personally found AMAZING color payoff from this Lip Lube. They are glossy and moisturizing. I absolutely love the formula, they are so awesome for an easy no fuss lip without any color compromise. I totally recommend them. In fact, I bought FIVE full size Lip Lubes because I was so in love.

Second (Replacement) Box

Products I Received:
• Rusk Paste
• W3LL People The Expressionist Bio Extreme Mascara
• Raw Spirit Fragrance Desert Blush
• Naobay Oxygenating Cream Moisturizer
• Paula’s Choice Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Concentrate Serum with Retinol

The Raw Spirit Fragrance Desert Blush is pictured above; this box arrived without any issues or problems. Even though the fragrance arrived without any mess, I still won’t be using it, duh. As for the other items, I’ll just be talking about the two different products that I received.

The Naobay Oxygenating Cream Moisturizer is so nice. It’s made with avacado and olive oils. You can use it on your face or even your body if you find yourself in need of extra moisture. I love how thick this cream is, but it doesn’t leave skin greasy. I brought this mini with me on my trip to Mexico to keep my sun parched skin extra happy.

I’m all about serums lately. I feel like I get so many more benefits out of my moisturizer if I use a serum first. I live in a ridiculously dry climate, and sometimes the most hydrating of moisturizers are still not enough for my skin. I was thrilled to receive the Paula’s Choice Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Concentrate Serum with Retinol. This is a great all around serum, providing anti aging benefits. It also claims to shrink the look of pores, however I don’t have large pores and didn’t really notice a difference. I would be interested to see if anyone did notice a difference??

Overall, May had a few issues but they were resolved and I got a few extra products out of it. Fair! The inital box I was sent was a good fit for me. I had an even mix of makeup versus other beauty products (excluding the fragrance). I was thrilled to finally receive a mini Laqa & Co Lip Lube, even though I had to clean it off of everything. My replacement box was great as a replacement, but I’m happy it wasn’t my inital box pick, too much skincare and not enough makeup for this blondie.

June’s Adventure Box

I loved (LOVED) the three box designs for June. I loved the sayings and the ombre colors! I was secretly hoping for the “Say Yes” box, even though I loved them all. I’m not engaged yet, but when the day comes, I already know that this box will make an amazing keepsake box. I will save it for years to come, if need be, just to fill it with memories. I was also thrilled that this box arrived without a hitch. That is if you discount the fact that we were all promised a FULL SIZE Eyeko Fat Liquid Liner. A liner that I was very excited to receive. Disappointment arrived a few weeks before my box when I found out that Eyeko was stuck at the border due to “customs issues” and we wouldn’t be receiving it. Naturally, I had hoped Birchbox would send a different full size item, but they didn’t.

They did send a “bonus” item, a stretchy headband. Although this was a nice addition, it didn’t make up for the Eyeko in my opinion.

Products I Received:
• Beauty Protector Beauty Wash Body Cleanser
• Coastal Scents Revealed 3 Eyeshadow Quad in Desert Bloom
• PARLOR by Jeff Chastain Moisturizing Sea Salt Spray
• Real Chemistry Luminous 3-Minute Peel
• Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels
• Pura Vida Lace Headband with Charm

Another box with mainly skincare and haircare, and minimal makeup. The Beauty Protector Beauty Wash Body Cleanser came in a super cute white bottle with pink detail. I totally plan to refill this for use when travelling or at the gym. The body wash itself was sub par. It had a slightly sweet scent and did it’s job. I prefer frothy, foamy, sudsy glory. A rich lather and a strong yummy scent. I felt like the wash only semi preformed in those two categories. Yes, I was clean. But I didn’t get to play in mounds of foamy bubbles first.

I was thrilled to receive the Coastal Scents Revealed 3 Eyeshadow Quad in Desert Bloom. First, because I loved my Coastal Scents Blush and Bronzer duo that I received in a past ipsy bag. I have wanted to try something else by this brand for a while now. And second, because I have been dying to try the so called “Naked” dupe Coastal Scents palettes. Now the Revealed 3, specifically, has not been compared as a “dupe” (1 & 2 were), but it would allow me to get an idea of the quality of the shadows. I love the colors included in this quad. Beautiful gold, brown, and burgundy/mauve shades. The quality is decent given the price point. But let’s be real, if the other palettes are a “dupe”, they are really just a budget friendly alternative. These by no means compare to the smooth, extremely pigmented, amazing quality of my Urban Decay babies. The Coastal Scents shadows were still nicely pigmented, went on easily and lasted through out the day. Would I buy the palette? No. I would save my cash for the next UD beauty. Would I recommend the palette to a budget conscious babe? Absolutely.

PARLOR by Jeff Chastain Moisturizing Sea Salt Spray, Birchbox did you read my mind?!?! I wanted a Sea Salt Spray. Perfect for effortless beachy waves, and even more perfect for when you don’t want to fight with your hair over the heat and humidity of the summer months. The spray was exactly what I was looking for. A non drying product that turned me into a beachy sex goddess. A++++ Birchbox – a hair product that I’m super excited for!!

I’m so nervous to try the Real Chemistry Luminous 3-Minute Peel!! I have super sensitive skin and I’m worried about what this “peel” will do to it. It is acid free and claims to be gentle, but I’m still scared. Has anyone tried it??? I’m also curious if it will take my summer glow away, aka peel off my tan. I’m giving myself a few more months to work up the courage to try the peel. And if I still haven’t tried it, I’ll pass it on to a brave friend. I have a feeling the product will be wonderful and I don’t want it to go to waste.

Finally, I received Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels. These are sooooo refreshing. They are a must for DIY spa days. I feel that they would be AMAZING for relaxing after little sleep. Like on a Red Eye flight, or after pulling an all nighter due to university papers, too much tequila, or newborn babies … (hopefully not all at once). I feel like my eyes instantly looked refreshed and hydrated after use. Eyes are the first to show signs of stress and aging. All the more reason to give them a little extra special love and treatment.

As for my bonus item, the Pura Vida Lace Headband, it is actually super cute. I swear I have an odd shaped head, because headbands never stay on (except for the hard “U” shaped ones). I put the band on, even secure it with bobby pins, and it will just fly off. Legit, fly off. Like pop of the back of my head and hit whatever poor soul is checking out my ass walking behind me. But it was still soooo adorable, so I re gifted it!!

June’s box arrived without any issues, but it was met with extreme disappointment that I (we) wouldn’t be receiving the Eyeko. Overall, I feel meh about my box. I loved 3/5 products (3/6 if you count the headband), and that’s not a high enough ratio for me to be satisfied, especially when my other beauty subscriptions are knocking it out of the park.

July’s Best Health Box

For the month of July, Birchbox teamed up with Best Health Magazine, even offering a subscription offer. Again, another super cute box design. I think the themed boxes are becoming one of my favorite Birchbox features. It’s a unique twist, exclusive to Birchbox.

The Best Health Magazine offer was a discount on their subscription service. The promotion was an offer for a year of monthly magazines for $18.97 (45% off the cover price of $34.93). I was expecting a free issue or special deal. This was basically the deal card they include in the pages of the magazine. In other words, available to ANYONE simply by opening up the pages.

Products I Received:
• Number 4 Clarifying Shampoo
• Vasanti Cosmetics BrightenUp! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator
• Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real! Mascara
• Acure Organics Sensitive Facial Cleanser
• Bain de Terre Argan Oil & Passion Flower Color Therapy Styling Oil

Right off the bat I thought I had a repeat item. Number 4 Clarifying Shampoo. A repeat after only 5 boxes?! No, it isn’t a repeat, but rather a different type of shampoo. I didn’t like the Number 4 Hydrating Shampoo I got in my March box. The smell was terrible. The shampoo was meh. I’m not overly thrilled to try another type by the same company. However, major points for the cute elephant on the front of the bottle.

Vasanti!! Yes I LOVE Vasanti. This is another item I have seen making the rounds in subscription boxes. I’m thrilled (beyond thrilled actually) that I received the Vasanti Cosmetics BrightenUp! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator in my box. They are such an amazing Canadian brand! They have great makeup and skincare products. This scrub was just as phenomenal as I had hoped it would be. The micro crystals are so fine and smooth. They polish away dull and dry skin in no time. This scrub didn’t irritate my sensitive skin at all. It left my face looking and feeling fresh and healthy. The recommendation was to use it 3 to 5 times per week. But for sensitive, fair skin like mine, I wouldn’t use it more than twice a week tops.

A scrub and a cleanser this month. Another cleanser to blend into the mix of cleansers I have accumulated. This is a really nice cleanser though! Acure Organics Sensitive Facial Cleanser is, well, organic, surprise. It is also fine to use on sensitive skin and focuses on not striping the skin of its moisture. So so so important for me to find in a cleanser. This is the perfect size to take on a trip or in an overnight bag.

A product I know and love. A “Holy Grail” kind of product for me. Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real! Mascara, my absolute favorite mascara. If I had to pick only one mascara to use for the rest of my life, it would be this one. I love the brush. It’s a plastic brush, but I absolutely love what it does for my lashes. Lifts, separates, volumizes, and lengthens. They really do look like falsies. I have read that people have a really hard time removing this mascara. I personally have never had that problem. A wet cotton pad and waterproof remover works wonders. Coconut oil or cold cream works well in a pinch.

My final item was a mini vial of Bain de Terre Argan Oil & Passion Flower Color Therapy Styling Oil. Another oil from another subscription box. This works to smooth flyaways and can be put into hair wet or dry. I prefer to style my hair by adding it wet. On static filled days I will rub a teeny TINY amount between my hands and quickly run through my dry styled hair. It’s a great product, but it’s a great one among many.

This was and will be my final Birchbox. I love two of the products I got this month but the other three were just mediocre. It’s not that they were bad products, they just weren’t for me or the types of products I’m looking for in a subscription service.

Here is an overview of the things I found during my five months with Birchbox Canada. The good and the not so good.

The love mes:
• The price ($10 CAD + $4.95 CAD shipping) is in Canadian Dollars. Meaning the price is fixed. Right now with the low CAD to USD, it’s nice to know exactly what the charge will be every month.
• Birchbox has started making themed boxes. They are so cute and so nice to reuse for storage or gifting.
• All boxes come with a detailed card outlining the products with descriptions and full size prices.
• Birchbox has an amazing shop. They have great items available, and you get points for the money you spend. Every month the featured items from boxes ship for free. This is a great deal for Canadian members.
• The points system is one of the best programs available in a subscription service. 10 points for every review (5 items in a box!). 1 point for every $1 spent in the shop. 50 points for every referral. Every 100 points gets you $10 to use in the shop. It’s that easy. And you can use it on any full size product they offer (you can’t use it for your subscription service).
• They have amazing customer service. If there is a problem they will fix it for you. And not just fix it, they make up for the inconvenience. I always heard back in a timely manner. No email went unanswered. Cancelling your subscription is also super easy to do. Literally a click of a button.

The love me nots:
• A missing designer box, a box that was damaged and all over the contents inside, a promised Eyeko that never made it into our box … all of these things were an annoyance. Yes, they were resolved, but it’s easier when everything goes smoothly.
• Birchbox is much more geared to a wide selection of beauty products. Skincare, hair care, and at least one makeup item. I prefer makeup, so this is only a “love me not” because of my personal preferences. If I’m going to get more skincare type items, I prefer higher end brands, to brands I have never heard of. In Canada, finding these unique brands, and having them not cost a fortune to ship, can be pretty difficult.
• Although the shop has amazing products, and a phenomenal points program, there is a hidden fee when Canadians purchase over $20 CAD, an International Handling Fee. It can turn a cheap purchase into a splurge. However, if you save up your points and wait for something you like to be a featured monthly item, you can get a great deal and end up only paying the CAD handling fee. In addition, they sometimes have combo packs for featured products that allow you to get multiple products and save.
• Birchbox CA recently stopped operating a separate social media account. They have now merged with Birchbox’s sites. This can be confusing and frustrating to Canadian customers because not all of the options for US customers available to us. Like products offered or the ability to pick your samples.

Overall, I think Birchbox Canada is an amazing subscription service. Especially if you are looking for a wide range of beauty products and tools. I mean we can’t forget that EVERYBODY got a Beauty Blender. I would totally resubscribe for another amazing offer like that. You can also have faith giving your money to this company. They will make it right no matter what, and you can cancel at anytime with no issues.

So that, my beauty bitches, is why I would “say yes” to anyone who asks if they should try Birchbox CA. But it is also why this girly cancelled!! ♡♡

April Showers, Topbox Flowers

April’s Topbox was a huge hit! And it was such a nice change of pace. Ipsy had some questionable bags being sent out, Birchbox forgot to send their products in the advertised Rifle Paper Co designer box, and Glossybox forgot to include the FREE promo code offer for new customers. April Fool’s or what?!

But Topbox was on point. Like they always are. I also received their bag FIRST this month. Speedy shipping is enough to make my entire week!! Topbox has been offering some seriously amazing Prive boxes lately, by I decided to opt for a regular Topbox this month.

Instead of the usual 4 items, we got 5!! All boxes included a mini Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration 30 SPF Sunscreen!

My Products:

Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration Sunscreen 30 SPF – I already use this Sunscreen. I already love this Sunscreen.  And I already own minis. Basically, I’m super excited for another. I’m fair skinned so I always leave home with SPF!

NYX Baked Eyeshadow in Smoke and Mirrors – I love NYX lippies but haven’t tried any of their eye shadows. So excited to try this full size beauty! This specific shade is a silvery gray metallic. I love working with baked shadows, although sometimes they don’t come across as super pigmented. This shadow seems very sheer and shimmery after one swipe. However, the shadow is buildable, and a darker shade can be achieved with more layers. Using the shadow wet, did wonders for the pigment and intensity. With a damp liner brush, this shadow is brilliant for applying as a smokey liner.

Deborah Lippmann Luminous Nail Color in – My first Deborah Lippmann nail polish!! Topbox has sent me the most nail polish out of any subscription service I have had, but the brands are always high end (Deborah Lippmann, Butter London, etc.). This shade is the most beautiful aqua, teal, mint amazingness. It’s a mermaid in a bottle. Did I mention that this is also FULL SIZE!? Topbox, I’m loving you!

Matrix Style Link Gloss Booster – Matrix makes great haircare! I’m excited to use something from the Style Link line. I have been eyeing the Volume Booster. Although, I got the Shine Booster, it’s a great way to try out the line! Blonde hair can tend to lose it’s shine, so this is a great product. The level of shine is completely customizable. Plus, it can be used three ways! Mix a drop with your favorite product, layer on damp or dry hair, or use to soften hold while increasing shine.

La Roche-Posay Substiane Serum – This product is desined to hydrate and increase the “bounce” of skin. I have never tried any La Roche-Posay products but I have heard some great things. They are a Canadian brand that specializes in sensitive skin. I can use a wide range of products, but I prefer sensitive products, especially around my eyes. I’m currently loving serums and know this will be a welcome addition to my growing collection.

I absolutely loved my Topbox this month. So much so, that I opted for the regular Topbox again for May. If you are interested in getting your own Topbox, with 4 personalized beauty products, it’s only $12 CAD a month with FREE shipping. Unfortunately, they only offer their boxes to Canadians, currently. If you want to check out my past Topboxes, including Prive Boxes, Click Here. I can’t wait to see what is in store for May!

Battle Of The Boxes

I’m totally switching it up this month, because I’m a lazy ass bitch, because all of my boxes came so late. I thought it would be fun to compare my MARCH boxes in one gigantic post. I must be a serious slut, because I love each of these subscription services. So don’t ask me to choose. Orgies are more my style, anyways.

Ipsy. The bitch who started it all. The one who introduced me to the “crack” of my beauty addiction – subscription boxes. Ipsy is only $10 USD a month!! Of course, us Canadians know, anything that cheap is too good to be true. And such is true with Ipsy. Add another $5 USD for shipping to Canada (FREE shipping for all US customers). The current exchange rate is not so nice; that “$10” bag, will be more like $20 CAD. It is still worth every penny nickel in my opinion, but something to keep in mind when signing up.

Ipsy sends 5 beauty products, every month, in a themed makeup bag. You complete a beauty profile to help customize the Glam Bags to your preferences. They send a nice mix of brands (high end and drugstore), sizes (deluxe and full size), and products (makeup, skin care, and hair care). You get points for reviews and referrals and you can use them to redeem for extra products (which I did this month and last month. I’m now point poor!!). I love this option because it allows you the opportunity to try a product you might not have received in your monthly bag.

My Products:

1. NYX Butter Lipstick – I received this in the shade “Hunk“. It is a beautiful, vibrant fushcia purple. Very bright and perfect for spring. I love bold lippies and am very excited to add this to my collection, this is a unique shade, unlike anything else I own. I love the formula of the Butter Lipsticks. They are smooth and buttery. The color is super pigmented and doesn’t crease, settle, or become patchy. My lips always feel moisturized after a full day of wearing this lipstick. The lipstick lasts a surprising amount of time (all morning and through coffee. I reapplied after lunch as I like the look of fresh lips). The color eventually fades to a nice stain if you don’t want to reapply.

2. Pūr~lisse beauty Pūr~Delicate Gentle Soymilk Cleanser & Makeup Remover – I love love love the Pūr~lisse SPF daily moisturizer I have from a previous ipsy bag, so this will make a great travel duo. The cleanser is gentle and milky. It doesn’t really lather but leaves behind silky smooth (clean) skin.

3. VINTAGE by Jessica Liebeskind Illuminating Face Highlighter – This Highlighter is EVERYTHING. No really, it is amazing!!! It looks so bright and pink in the package, but it applies to a soft shimmering pink highlight. Such a gorgeous color, that I really can’t explain, you need to try this product in person to truly be apart of the beautiful person’s club, to truly understand. Most highlights that I already own are champagne toned, but this pink highlight kicks all my champagne’s asses. I can see this little pink square becoming a staple in my beauty routine.

4. St. Ives Fresh Skin Apricot Scrub – I love St. Ives. I still periodically use products from them. When I was on a strict student budget, I used St. Ives with my other fav, Nivea. I prefer the St Ives Green Tea Scrub to this one, however. All of that said, this is actually not a good product to use on your face. The jagged sides of the pit pieces can actually scratch your skin and create tears for bacteria to grow. GROSS! So why did I love this scrub? For my body!!! My hands, feet, elbows, legs!

5. Evelyn Iona Cosmetics Concealer – The product itself looks amazing, organic and natural, love! However, I received this product in the shade Flawless, and that is a Medium Ivory shade. NOT my color. Ipsy, I’m a natural blonde, meaning I’m extremely fair skinned. I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt with this product, as it is the first WTF moment I have had with you. But seriously, a Medium Ivory shade … really? Regardless of my bitching, I plan to use this as an eyeshadow base. The formula itself is glorious and I think a little repurposing will do wonders for this little beauty.

Bonus Products:

6. Elizabeth Mott All Over Shadow Brush – I love brushes. And I love pink. Sounds like a match made in heaven. Ipsters who had received this in their January bag, had great things to say about it. I cashed in some points to have this added to my bag. It’s the perfect all over shadow brush. Great for travel or daily use. The bristles are super soft but the brush itself is super dense (which I love the most in a brush).

7. Urban Decay Perversion Mascara – I already love this mascara so I jumped on the opportunity to add this to my bag. It is volumizing and lengthing, while being SUPER buildable. You can apply additional coats anytime, even six, eight, ten hours after the initial application. This makes going from a fresh daytime makeup to a sexy sultry night look, beyond easy.

I loved March’s Floral Fantasy theme and I’m feeling ready for spring! Click Here to sign up for your own Glam Bag or Click Here to see February’s bag.

Welcome to the Boobs&Blonde family, Birchbox!! This company has great marketing, they really do. They suckered me (and 5 of my friends) into signing up because they were (ARE … Click Here if you’re confused) offering a FULL SIZE Beauty Blender and cleansing Solid, with every March box!! How can any self respecting makeup whore, makeup junkie, possibly say “NO” to that?

Birchbox is $10 CAD a month, with $5 CAD shipping. Since the subscription is in Canadian dollars, exchange rate does not affect the price, YAY!! You can expect the same bill, every month. I wish Ipsy would pick this up, I know they have already lost a few customers after our dollar decided to go muff diving.

Birchbox will send 5 personalized beauty products, right to your door, in a tiny brown logo box. I actually was expecting the box to be bigger than it was, but maybe I always expect things to be larger than they actually are … haha, wink wink. This is my first month with them, but it seems that they send an even mix of beauty products in all categories (hair, makeup, skin care, fragrance, etc.). Included, is a card with product descriptions and price. I love this feature, it allows you to know the exact value of the contents, as well as providing helpful direction about where to purchase what you end up loving. Birchbox also awards points for reviews and referrals. Instead of redeeming points for products, like Ipsy does, Birchbox credits every 100 points to $10 that you can use in their shop (typically full size items of the monthly offered products). The featured items (all items offered that specific month) ship for FREE. This is a great way to buy full size items of your favorite products.

My Products:

1. ModelCo Party Proof Lipstick – I LOVE this lipstick! I saw from a quick creep peek on Instagram that some people had received this lippie in light/nude shades. So not my thing. Kudos to Birchbox for sending gold with a bright shade. I received the shade “Peony” which is described as a hot pink. I personally find it is a vibrant red pink shade. The formula itself is moisturizing and creamy. Application is smooth and even, with no issues of bleeding or creasing. This little tube packs a punch and will for sure last the night, but the degree of “Party Proof” will depend on your degree of partying.

2. Beautyblender + mini Solid Blendercleanser – The one Holy Grail product that made me jump on signing up for Birchbox! This duo is the perfect way be introduced to the world of BB. These little pink sponges retail for $26 CAD, not including the Solid. That makes this Birchbox an amazing deal, even without the other four products!! This sponge is just as good as you have heard it is. Using the sponge wet, is the only way to do it! Your makeup will be applied flawlessly. It isn’t just a miracle worker at applying makeup like Foundation, BB Cream, Concealer etc. it also applies cream blush like a dream, and blends contour like a fantasy. Ya. Miracle, Dream, Fantasy. It doesn’t get much better than that. I think I might have to pick up the Micro version at the big VIB event this weekend … maybe.

3. Number 4™ Hydrating Shampoo – A $82 CAD shampoo?! Really? This stuff must be amazing. Result? Not so stunning. This shampoo is nice, but it had nothing on my Living Proof or Bumble & Bumble products. I also didn’t care for the smell. I like fruit and fresh scents. This reminded me of the smell of an old lady’s house. Not young, sexy, fresh, or fruity. I like the bottle it came in and will definitely be refilling it with my favorite shampoos for travelling, once it’s used up.

4. Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré (24-Hour Miracle Cream) – Such a tiny sample, but you don’t need much. This cream has minimal scent (yay!) and is very moisturizing. The cream is rich, without being heavy. It can be used anywhere on the body, including the face. It can also be used as a makeup remover and is safe to apply on freshly shaved skin. Such a great versatile mini that makes a great travel essential!!

5. Harvey Prince Imperial Gardenia – I hate getting fragrance samples. Obviously, it’s going to happen from time to time, the point of subscription boxes is to try new things! But I instantly get disappointed when I see them. Luckily, this is the first one I have received in a box (across all companies) and it also appears that almost everyone got one. I’m soooo not complaining, how could I when I am still on my BB high?? The scent itself is floral (yuck), I like fruity!! The Harvey Prince Ageless (pink grapefruit scent) would have been more my style.

I’ll be honest. I was planning on signing up for Birchbox, getting the Beauty Blender, and then unsubscribing. But they won my heart. Especially with the full size lipstick, they found my weakness. I’m hooked. Shit. Click Here if you want to be hooked too. #peerpressure

Topbox. My Canadian indulgence. I love that Topbox is a CANADIAN company. I have to give love to a Canuck company catering to beauty. They are the cheapest beauty subscription company for Canadians, but they send the highest quality items, in terms of brands, compared to my other subscription services.

At only $12 CAD a month, Topbox is a phenomenal value. And the box ships for FREE. Yes, free!! That’s a big deal for us Canadians, rarely anything ships free. They send 4-5 personalized beauty samples, often leading towards 4 (unless the samples are tiny). Instead of a box or makeup bag, Topbox ships in a unique tube (or organza bag if you prefer). Topbox includes a descriptor card, like Birchbox, detailing the description, price and where to buy info for each product.

Unique to Topbox, is the ability to wish and opt for a Prive Box. Topbox explains:

A Prive Topbox is a box of samples from only one brand. Each month you will be emailed a Wish List so you can “wish” for the boxes you are interested in. Due to limited quantities no member is guaranteed a Prive Topbox. If you do not get the Prive Topox you will be sent the regular Topbox.

I love the option to swap the boxes!! The wishlist will have specifics about what is contained in each box so you know exactly what to expect. Prive boxes could have only one item in them, instead of the typical 4-5 samples in the regular Topbox.

My Products:

1. Medusa Makeup Lipgloss – My first impressions of this gloss were not great. I received the shade “Sparkle Mania” and that basically describes my thoughts when I looked at the tube, that or devastated chaos. The product was full size (always a bonus) and the packaging was super adorable. The company is all natural, vegan, paraben free, and cruelty free (another bonus). So why the bad first impression? It basically reminded me of kiddie or dollar store lipgloss, clear and extremely (EXTREMELY) glittery. Other subscribers had received shades with color (red, pink etc.) and I felt those might have been better. But I’m a bitch. We already know this. And apparently I’m a judgmental bitch. Because the lipgloss is great! A second look showed that it was indeed very sparkley, but it was not chunky glitter as I had initially thought, it had fine tiny bits of gold flecks in it. I opened the tube and the formula glided across my lips. It wasn’t runny (as my dollar store judgements had led me to believe) but it wasn’t sticky either. It was smooth and created the perfect amount of sheer perfection. The gloss looked stunning alone. The shimmer became less obvious once applied and instead created a mesmerizing, dewy, supple pout. I haven’t tried this over lipstick YET, but I think this little beauty my be my new favorite “topper”.

2. Philosophy Hope In A Jar – This moisturizer is a cult favorite. I have tried this moisturizer before, but am more than happy to have another mini to add to my stash. This is a pretty small sample, but that makes it perfect for travel, carry on, the purse, or the gym bag. This moisturizer does what it is supposed to and leaves my skin feeling smooth, hydrated, and soft. I’m still not convinced that I should switch from Biotherm to Philosophy, but I will gladly incorporate what samples I have into my travel routine (someone need to tell Biotherm that they need to make travel friendly, non glass minis for me to buy!).

3. Schwarzkopf BC Moisture Kick Beauty Balm – I love getting hair samples like this. The tube is a very generous size, allowing you to use it many times, and really get a good idea if you like the product or not. I used a small amount as directed but it still made my hair greasy. It is common for me to have this issue the first time using a new hair product as I have naturally very fine, thin hair. It takes trial and error for me to find the perfect amount of product to use in my hair without making to greasy. My hair did appear to be smoother and didn’t dry out once I started styling it with my curling iron. I’m hoping my next trial goes better and a smaller amount will help my hair be less greasy and therefore more voluminous. I really hate when my hair is flat and weighed down by product.

4. Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist – I’m elated to receive this product!! And it even comes in a mini glass spray bottle. The mist is supposed to restore, tone, and hydrate the skin in one spritz. This is what I refer to as a “princess product”. It’s not an essential and it’s expensive but it is beyond luxurious. I love the feeling that this product leaves on my skin. I DO feel refreshed. I DO feel hydrated. I like to spritz this in the morning before applying my makeup or even in the late afternoon between appointments and grabbing a cocktail with friends (over top of my makeup). I see this becoming a travel essential!! Not because of the size but because of it’s usage. I can imagine this being AH-MAZE-ING on tired, dehydrated “airplane” skin or to spritz after a long road trip being stuck in the car. I will definitely be buying this product once I’m done the mini!

I love Topbox. I love them for being Canadian, I love them for being so affordable (yet high end), and I love them for providing free shipping!! Click Here to see what I got last month. If you are interested in signing up (Canadians only) let me know and I can send you an email referral!!

The baddest battle of the boxes!! And they all won. Because I’m a makeup whore who loves products of all shapes and sizes, I don’t discriminate. I couldn’t possibly pick only one poison. Which one do you like best? What are you subscribed too?! Tell me! I always like to feed my addiction. ♡

Walmart Wonder

Did you know that Walmart has a clearance section? If you live in the States then yes, you probably did. You guys have a whole section designated to clearance items!! We Canadians, don’t. But clearance deals can still be found. Each department will have a designated mini area with any clearance items. Typically, these are shelves on the back end of a rack or in a dark corner. Inviting, eh?! Nothing like making your way into the deepest darkest corner and emerging with some wonderful treasures.

Pantene Pro-V Advanced+ Keratin Repair Collection Starter Kit
Retail: $10.99 CAD
Steal: $2 CAD

Everyone knows I’m a brand whore. An expensive brand whore. And Pantene does not fit into this category. I don’t think I have used drugstore shampoo and conditioner since I was a preteen, even as a teen I used Redken. But when I saw this SET on clearance for $2 CAD, I knew I had to give the drugstore brand a chance. This line, the Pantene Expert Collection, is specifically designed for damaged or aging hair. This formula, Advanced+ Keratin Repair, is supposed to “reverse 2 years worth of damage in just 2 minutes“. That’s quite a big promise for a drugstore brand haircare line.

The kit contained:
• Advanced+ Keratin Repair Shampoo
• Advanced+ Keratin Repair Conditioner
• Advanced+ Keratin Repair Split End Fuser

So the verdict, did it repair my split ends and strengthen my fine, thin, natural blonde mane? Yes! I did see a difference in the ends of my hair, they did look fused!! But to be fair, any of my smoothing treatments (i.e. Moroccanoil Treatment) make my ends look the same way. This didn’t do anything amazing to my hair. Did this take off two years of damage? No. Did my hair feel smooth and soft afterwards? Yes. Maybe if your hair was truly exhausted, this would make a world of difference. But I take care of my hair. I use coconut oil overnight, I comb it when it’s wet (not brush), I try to use hair products without sulfates. Maybe my hair isn’t damaged enough to show any true, shocking results. Go on bitch, go and brush your shoulders off.

This kit was worth every penny of my $2 CAD. But will I buy again? No, especially not with the $13.99 CAD price per product. I would rather spend a few more dollars and get a higher quality product. This kit however, will be great for travel!! I don’t travel with my good hair products, as luggage often goes missing, and far too often for me to risk it. Besides using the Pantene as my travel bitch, I will stick to my ride-or-die salon products for my daily needs. And a final word to my babes: Bumble and Bumble, Living Proof, Redken … don’t worrying I’m still your little (brand) whore

Pick A Prive

Topbox has some awesome Prive options this month!! I was so torn between what to wish for! Topbox is a $12 CAD Beauty Subscription Box that ships directly to your house every month. They will send you the regular Topbox which is filled with 4-5 beauty products (sometimes full size!). Every month you have the option to wish for a Prive Topbox, or wish for multiple boxes. You never know what you will end up receiving, you could still get sent a Regular Topbox despite a lengthy wishlist. They had quite a few options offered this month but these were my favorite (like seriously how can you pick?):

I have seen Topbox offer the Mystery box before and it turned out to be Kerastase hair products. I can’t guarantee that this box will be the same, but if the silhouette of the products is anything to go on, they resemble the Kerastase product line!!

I wished for the Benefit Prive Box again, because I’m a true Benebabe at heart! However, it took all I had to not wish for all three of these wonderful options. Did you opt for a Prive box this month? Which one did you pick, was it one of the ones that I didn’t mention?

Boxing Day Beauties

Finally! FINALLY! My goodies have arrived!!! Sephora did things a little differently this past Boxing Day, but I kind of liked it! I bought a few things online (somethings were online exclusives) and also picked up a couple of extras in store.

In Store Purchases:

Buxom Dealer’s Choice
Value: $35 CAD
Steal: $13 CAD

I picked up two of these sets!! It came with a mini Hold the Line waterproof eyeliner in “Call Me” and a full sized Full Bodied Lipgloss in “Yoo Hoo”. I already own quite a few of these eyeliners, but this set was worth it just for the lipgloss. The gloss is a beautiful nude shade with plumping effect (but no tingle).

Smashbox Mini Bestsellers Kit
Value: Unknown
Steal: $12 CAD

I have used many smashbox products before but none of these ones (yay!). I’m already loving the Photo Finish Hydrating Under Eye Primer. It doesn’t provide all the coverage I would want for my undereye (it says it can be worn alone) but it is a great base to use before applying concealer to the sensitive eye area. The Photo Finish Foundation Primer is Oil-Free and although I don’t wear foundation, will still work well under a BB cream. I love trying new mascaras and the Full Exposure Mascara is no exception. I did receive a sample of this in my Shopper’s Drug Mart Eye Studio Sampler, but I haven’t tried it yet (I have soooo many minis to use!).

Ole Henrikson Merry and Bright Duo
Value: $58 CAD
Steal: $15 CAD

I couldn’t help but snap up this deal! I already own and love the Truth Serum Collagen Booster. I love to put a layer on in the morning before I apply my moisturizer. I have never tried the Pure Truth Youth Activating Oil but I am super excited to add this to my skincare routine!

Too Faced Better Than Sex Amazing Eyes Set
Value: Unknown
Steal: $12 CAD

It’s no secret that I LOVE this mascara! A girl can never have too much sex many minis. I’m so glad they brought this set back (they offered it a year or two ago) because the eyeliner (Perfect Eyes Eyeliner in Perfect Black) is pretty awesome too. Thanks to recent sale purchases, it’s safe to say I’m pretty stocked on black eyeliners!!

Bare Minerals Crowd Pleasers
Value: $47 CAD
Steal: $12 CAD

I love my BareMinerals i.d. bronzer so I am beyond thrilled to add the i.d. blush to my collection! It is a very natural looking blush that is perfect for a minimalist or everyday look. As for the Marvelous Moxie lipgloss (in Hot Shot AND full size!) it is the most perfect flamingo hued pink. This is my first experience with the Marvelous Moxie line!! The applicator seems a little flimsy (I prefer them harder that’s what she said). But the gloss itself is lovely.

Sephora Sparkle Vinyl Lipgloss
Retail: $18 CAD
Steal: $6 CAD

A $6 lipgloss? Clearly this was an impulse buy (aren’t they all?). I just couldn’t resist with such a low price tag! This formula is filled with sparkle and shine!

Online Purchases:

Bumble and Bumble The Ultimate Blow Dry
Value: $18 CAD
Steal: $10 CAD

Bumble and Bumble Styling Lotion Spray used to be my favorite go to hair care product in high school. But I haven’t used Bumble and Bumble products since (no idea why? It just happened that way!). I’m sure excited to try these products out and see if I can recreate that spark I used to have with B&B!

Tarte High Performance Naturals Energy Duo
Value: $31 CAD
Steal: $14 CAD

This lip and cheek duo are “intuitive”, meaning they appear clear, but once applied will change color and tint based on your skin’s pH and energy. How fun! I do like both of these products, however you need to be mindful of how much product you apply, especially the cheek stain. It goes on clear so it is very easy to apply way too much. Also, with the lip balm, be careful to not let it get on the skin outside of your lips, because it WILL turn your skin pink too! I enjoyed seeing my personal color (which on my lips took on a purple undertone!).

Bite Beauty Mix n’ Mingle Lip Minis (Luminous Crème Lipstick Duo)
Retail: $15 CAD

This item was not a Boxing Day special, but I really wanted the duo and they were sold out in store. I love that there are two lipsticks in one “stick”. This is sooo perfect for travel!! I purchased the shades Violet and Palomino. Violet is a beautiful purple fuchsia, and Palomino is a bright true pink (blue undertones?). I’m loving Bite Beauty lately!!

That’s my haul. Oh my. I have bought so much makeup lately. But these deals!!! My online order made me hit Rouge, and although I picked my kit up in store, they sent me another kit with my online order (but without the card). I was so excited to get a second exclusive Bite Beauty Rouge Lipstick but it seems my German Shepherd was more excited. I found him helping himself to the tube (good thing Bite Beauty is all about edible lipstick!!). I was able to scoop some of the remaining product out into a tiny jar, but the tube itself was totalled! Silly puppy!!
