Pick A Prive

Topbox has some awesome Prive options this month!! I was so torn between what to wish for! Topbox is a $12 CAD Beauty Subscription Box that ships directly to your house every month. They will send you the regular Topbox which is filled with 4-5 beauty products (sometimes full size!). Every month you have the option to wish for a Prive Topbox, or wish for multiple boxes. You never know what you will end up receiving, you could still get sent a Regular Topbox despite a lengthy wishlist. They had quite a few options offered this month but these were my favorite (like seriously how can you pick?):

I have seen Topbox offer the Mystery box before and it turned out to be Kerastase hair products. I can’t guarantee that this box will be the same, but if the silhouette of the products is anything to go on, they resemble the Kerastase product line!!

I wished for the Benefit Prive Box again, because I’m a true Benebabe at heart! However, it took all I had to not wish for all three of these wonderful options. Did you opt for a Prive box this month? Which one did you pick, was it one of the ones that I didn’t mention?

Hourglass Heaven

Hourglass has recently launched their Modernist Eyeshadow Palette and they are truly a work of art. I had gotten a gift card from my lovely friends for my birthday and I planned on spending it on the Too Faced Semi Sweet Chocolate Bar Palette and this little beauty.

An artist-inspired eye shadow palette with seamless color transitions—offering effortlessly blendable and wearable shades in a range of finishes and textures.

These palettes flaunt five complementary shades of soft and airy, finely-milled formulas in a curated selection of shades, finishes, and texture. Designed with the innovative multi-press technique, each palette features an array of finishes from matte to shimmer for a number of looks with depth and dimension. Available in seven unique and wearable color palettes, these shadows are exceptionally buildable in color, giving you unprecedented control over the intensity of your look.

Sephora Chinook was giving away the mini Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm in Super Strawberry as a FREE bonus with VIB Rouge purchases. This is the second time they gave me one!! It is a great moisturizing balm with a nice touch of color. This shade is a sheer berry pink. FREE gifts always making me smile.

Now the palette, the real reason that you are reading this. The case is nice and solid. It is a sleek chocolate brown with HOURGLASS written in gold on the far right side. This palette is much smaller than I expected, easily fitting into the palm of my hand. I was actually surprised at how small the palette was for the hefty $67 CAD price tag.

I picked up the Obscura palette. It has the most beautiful earth tones. Each palette comes with five carefully coordinated shades. Obscura comes with the shades, cream, smokey brown, rose gold, coffee, and cool bronze. The way the eyeshadows are placed in the palette is truly breathtaking. I’m drooling. Seriously. It is so beautiful I didn’t want to even touch it.

The wave pattern is beautiful but also so practical. It allows you to easily coat all parts of any cut of brush. I love the mix of matte and shimmer shades. The dark browns specifically are very similar in depth of color, but one is matte while the other has a deep coppery shimmer. The rose gold and bronze shimmers are gorgeous, adding a beautiful pop to any makeup look.

I have heard so many mixed reviews on this palette. But I don’t understand why. This palette does take a certain finesse to master, but the extra time is worth it because the payoff is phenomenal. You need a light dab to pick up the shadow, no swirling needed. The shadows are extremely fine and powdery but they apply so easily to the eye. Fallout is minimal if you are sure to apply it with a light hand. These shadows were extremely buildable and blendable, allowing you to easily control the depth and dynamic of your shadow look. Sephora added these tips for using the Modernist palette:

Unlike traditional formulas, Modernist eye shadows are soft and airy; use a light hand when dipping brush or fingertips into product.
-When applying with a brush, tap off excess product before applying to the eye.
– Use the Hourglass No. 11 Smudge brush in the narrow valleys of palette for a more precise/detailed application.
-Use the Hourglass No. 3 All Over Shadow brush on the smoother surface areas of palette for broader application.
-Deeper/shimmer shades can be layered for intensity or may be used with a damp brush for a more dramatic effect.
-Use with an eye shadow base/primer for longer wear.

I feel like the negative reviews were due to people having traditional expectations and no willingness to open their minds to the specific intentions behind this palette. I will definitely be adding another one of these to my collection. I’m eyeing the beautiful plums of the Exposure and the stunning greens in the Color Field. Have you tried the Modernist shadows? What were your thoughts?! ♡♡

Shopper’s Super Saver Splurge

Splurge“. Or at least it would have been if I wasn’t AMAZING at tracking down such insane deals.

Once again, Shopper’s rubbed me all types of wonderful. Ya ya. SDM is expensive, but only if you don’t know what you are doing. They have a phenomenal rewards program, the best in Canada if you ask me. If you shop during extra points events, you will hit reward levels in no time, the second half of this post was purchased during one of these events.

But first, you’re still in awe from seeing how I spent $7.73 CAD and SAVED $117.51 CAD. Here’s what I got:

L’Oréal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara & Super Liner Ultra Precision Diamantissime Liquid Eyeliner Combo Pack (Blackest Black; Waterproof & Regular)
Value: $25.98 CAD
Retail: $14.99 CAD
Steal: $1.99 CAD

This is a new mascara from L’Oréal. I love the concept and was totally curious to try out the one of a kind brush. Did you know L’Oréal owns Urban Decay? Surprised? Looking for a good drug store brand? L’Oréal is always my go to for cheap mascara. One of my first mascaras was the original L’Oréal Voluminous. Obviously that made me extra excited to try out this formula! The picture shows the packaging as gold, but that was just the flash on my camera, the tube itself is actually silver. The lid is round and thick, I actually found it difficult to hold when applying the mascara. It felt like it could easily slip out of my grasp.

The brush is hard to capture with a photograph. It has two sides that fan out, with the backside having a slight curve covered in small bristles. It was incredibly difficult to get used to this brush. It needs to be angled perfectly to apply to the lashes. Applying to my right eye (I’m right handed) was relatively easy. The left eye however, was significantly more difficult. Getting the brush to not poke me in the eye with the fan bristles, but also coat the lashes, took some time and finesse. This is definitely NOT a grab and go mascara. All of that said, the formula is wonderful. It separates and adds tons of volume as well as some length. I think once you get the hang of the brush, this could easily become a drugstore favorite.

The liner has bits of silver glitter in it, making it the perfect extra touch for Friday and Saturday night makeup. The felt tip of this liner is very fine, perfect for thin or thick lines.

Overall, $2 CAD for a set? Omg yes! I picked up 6 of these. Yes 6! A mix of waterproof and non. For $1 per product, I could bring a tube on vacation without worrying about losing it or leaving it behind. Mascara will last a very long time if the factory seal is not broken.

Ammo & Tar

Doesn’t sound like a beauty post does it?! But that’s exactly what my latest Sephora haul was all about. Of course I’m referring to Urban Decay’s Ammo Palette and the OCC Lip Tars!! Recently (okay I’m a bit behind) I wrote about getting two free minis with any $35 CAD purchase at Sephora. I couldn’t resist making a purchase when I saw all of the goodies in the sale section of the website.

OCC After Dark Stained Gloss Set
Value: $36 CAD
Retail: $24 CAD
Steal: $12 CAD

I have been hearing great things about the OCC (Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics) lip products and I have been dying to try some for myself. This set comes with four mini test tubes in the shades Little Black Dress (sheer glossy black), Hedonist (intense pastel pink), New Wave (glassy neon pink), and Jealous (red-orange shellac). These glosses are intensely pigmented, and shiny (not matte like the Lip Tars). I love that you can mix them together to create your own custom shades, using the black to vamp it up a bit. I admit I thought these were mini Lip Tars, but realized very quickly that these were Stained Glosses. I wasn’t disappointed because I love gloss as much as lipstick and a trial revealed these are seriously soooo pigmented and bold (I had to say it again). These need to be reapplied after a few hours or eating, like most lipglosses, they don’t last as long as a lipstick. They wear thick and border on sticky, I love this in a gloss, but not everybody feels this way. The best part? It comes with a mini precision brush. I found this to be an amazing steal at only $12 CAD!

Urban Decay Ammo Palette
Retail: $40 CAD
Steal: $20 CAD

I love anything Urban Decay!! Especially their eyeshadows. This palette comes with 10 eyeshadows, a brush, and a mini original Eyeshadow Primer Potion. The shades included are Smog (deep coppery bronze), Mildew (mossy green shimmer with gold shift), Oil Slick (matte black with silver micro-glitter), Last Call (metallic sugar plum), Chopper (copper shimmer with silver micro-glitter), Maui Wowie (metallic golden beige with silver glitter), Shattered (turquoise shimmer with gold shift), Polyester Bride (white snow shimmer with silver micro-glitter), Grifter (sheer lavender shimmer with silver micro-glitter), and Sin (champagne shimmer). In typical UD fashion, all of these shadows are highly pigmented and blendable. Some of the more glittery shades have a bit of fallout, but nothing too serious.

This palette is similar to the Urban Decay Wallpaper Palette I got YEARS ago (like 7? 8?), long before UD had such a huge cult following (thanks in part to the Naked line). Some of the shades included in the Wallpaper palette are also included in the Ammo Palette (Smog, Chopper, Last Call, and Shattered).

Here is a side by side comparison of my original UD love (Wallpaper), and the 2015 upgrade (Ammo). Although some of the shades are the same, they are my favorite shades so having duplicates is not an issue in the slightest.

Sephora Collection Eye For Color Mini Eye Brush Capsule
Value: $40 CAD
Retail: $19 CAD
Steal: $10 CAD

When the description said these brushes were “mini”, they weren’t lying. These are SMALL. The capsule that holds them is barely bigger than a tube of lipstick. I have travel brushes that look ginormous compared to these itty bitties. I actually love the small size of these brushes, they are small enough to fit in a clutch or workout bag, but still have enough handle to make them practical. The bristles themselves are soft but dense. This set contains 4 brushes, a Shadow Brush, Crease Brush, Pointed Brush, and Angled Smudge Brush.

Last but not least, the FREE stuff!

I got my three free samples with my online order and for my two deluxe samples I picked the Yves Saint Laurent Mascara Volume Effect Faux Cils and Tarte Timeless Smothing Primer. I love getting extra deluxe samples, especially when everything I purchase to get them, is on sale!

Sephora. I’m so addicted to you. I’m still eyeing contour palettes for the latest mini freebies!! Finding it harder and harder to resist!! Do these mini product deals entice you to spend? Or are you not a mini slut like me (we’re still talking about makeup, right!?!)?

A new month means a new Topbox! I was extra excited for this month because Topbox was featuring a Benefit Cosmetics Prive Topbox with Canada’s FIRST look at the new Roller Lash Mascara. I prayed to the beauty gods that I would receive it. Topbox also offered a Beauty Surprise to be added for $10 CAD to any box. I once again opted in, hoping I would be one of the lucky ones to get a “luxury beauty item” worth $100+.

Topbox is a $12 CAD (free shipping) Canadian beauty subscription service that ships right to your door. They send you 4-5 personalized beauty samples, a mix of deluxe sample size and full size products. Every month you have the option to select the regular Topbox or “wish” for a Prive Topbox. The Prive boxes have descriptions about what is inside so you know exactly what you are “wishing” for.

I picked up a little tip over Instagram that a quick glance at the reference number provided with the tracking information, will let you know if you will receive a Prive box (P BENE for this month’s Benefit, P VASA for last month’s Vasanti, etc.) or the regular Topbox (B1, B2, B3, etc.). I was elated to learn that this month my reference code read “P BENE”!!!

This month’s Benefit Cosmetics #glamourcurl Prive Topbox contained:
▪ The POREfessional Deluxe Sample
▪ Puff Off! Deluxe Sample
▪ It’s Potent! Eye Cream
▪ Roller Lash Mascara

My beauty surprise was a Butter London Nail Lacquer in the shade . It is an absolutely gorgeous shimmery blue. If you could bottle a mermaid, this would be what it looked like. The way the light hits this polish is just breathtaking. The retail on this polish is $17.50 CAD, so for $10 CAD it was a steal. I don’t own any Butter London polishes so I can’t wait to try this!!

I am already a huge fan of Benefit Cosmetics. I swear by their They’re Real! Mascara and Watt’s Up! Soft Focus Highlighter. So obviously I was thrilled to get a box filled with Benefit samples!! Surprisingly I had only tried the POREfessional, all the other samples were new to me. I can’t wait to try them all, especially the Roller Lash Mascara. It can be layered with They’re Real! Mascara or worn alone! The Puff Off! is designed to reduce puffiness and reduce the look of fine lines, where as It’s Potent! is designed to reduce dark circles. Used together, they are perfect for rough mornings after a long night partying, studying.

I’m loving the Prive boxes lately, I always opted for the regular Topbox in the past, but lately the Prive has been to hard too resist. Click Here to see what I got last month from Topbox.

Kisses From Sephora

Sephora is currently saying “Happy Valentine’s Day” with this extra sweetheart FREE gift with purchase for all VIBs and VIB Rouges. You get three lip minis in a little black pouch. Simply enter code VIBXOXO at checkout with any $50 CAD purchase.

Extra special thanks to the always gorgeous, Janet from Jan&Jot, for immediately sending me this, just to make sure I had seen it (I hadn’t because I was shopping!!). I’m still debating ordering a contour palette to get this deal. Must resist. Can’t resist.

Whether you’re gearing up for round two, or nursing a hangover, these facts will make your day. And as with everything I write, read at your discretion.
